Sulapac Solid, a new alternative to conventional plastic

Marimade is our creative playground for multifunctional everyday objects featuring upcycled, recycled or biobased materials. One example is the 100% biobased Sulapac® material, which leaves no permanent microplastics behind.

Almost 300 million tons of plastic is produced every year.* All too often, the plastic we use ends up in the wrong places. Aware of the ever-growing amounts of single-use plastics that have filled our lives and the environment, the Sulapac founders, Doctors of Biochemistry Suvi Haimi, Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasalo and Antti Pärssinen, set out to find a solution and came up with an alternative to conventional plastic.

Today, the Sulapac® materials come in various adaptations for different uses from cosmetics packaging to sustainable straws. One of its many forms is the 100%-biobased Sulapac Solid, which is ideal for products used on daily basis – such as Marimekko Marimade lunch boxes and takeaway mugs. Sulapac Solid is made of naturally occurring clay minerals and biobased polymers.

With naturally occurring clay minerals and a ceramic feel, Sulapac Solid doesn’t compromise aesthetics or functionality. This exceptionally hardwearing biobased material has a high impact strength, and is dishwasher and microwave safe. Furthermore, Sulapac Solid leaves no permanent microplastics behind.

*According to the UNEP: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/world-leaders-set-sights-plastic-pollution

“Our customers had long been requesting a biodegradable yet lasting plastic alternative that is also dishwasher and microwave safe. At first, we didn’t think it was possible to create such a material that had all of those properties, because they seem counterintuitive to each other. It was a great feeling to do the initial product testing and realize that we had actually made it possible.”
